Mackenzie fell in love at a very young age on her planet Shadow with a six year old, Malcom Reynolds. He was her first, and until thus far, only love. They broke up, though. It was a messy sort of thing. But it was just what she needed to leave Shadow for the core-planets to go to one of the most prestigous medical schools in the verse.

When Mac returned, however, she found what was left of her home after the Alliance destroyed it. It was 2509 and she enlisted in the Unification war as a medic. Life's a bitch sometimes, and she was reunited with her lost love. It was awkward, and painful, but she worked in the same platoon until being reassigned right before the battle of Du-Khang. And that was it. The end of any interaction she had with the man who held her heart for more than a decade. Until now, however. She found herself a job on a firefly ship, and as luck would have it, Mal was the captain.
